# Jim Corbett's Famous Man-Eaters Jim Corbett's legend rests on his extraordinary skill as a tracker and his remarkable courage in pursuing large cats that had turned to hunting humans. The Champawat Tigress (killed 1907) had killed 436 people in Nepal and Uttarakhand — the highest human death toll ever recorded for any wild animal. The Panar Leopard (killed 1910) had taken 400 lives in Almora district. The Rudraprayag Leopard (killed 1926) had terrorised pilgrims on the Kedarnath route for 8 years killing 125 people. Corbett deeply understood that man-eaters were usually injured or ill animals.
