# Himalayan Monal — State Bird (Continued) The Himalayan Monal (Lophophorus impejanus) is one of nature's most spectacular creations — a large, brilliantly coloured pheasant that inhabits the alpine and subalpine forests of the Himalayas, and Uttarakhand's proud state bird. The male is a walking masterpiece of iridescence: a metallic green head, shimmering blue and purple upper parts, and a chestnut back. Found between 2,500 and 5,000 metres elevation, it uses its powerful curved bill to dig for bulbs, tubers, roots, and insects. The female is subdued brown for camouflage.
